Debswana, workers finally iron out wage agreement
September 14, 2004

Wage negotiations between workers at Botswana's four diamond mines and mining company Debswana were settled yesterday on its terms, the company said.

"The Botswana Mining Workers' Union has accepted our offer of a 10 percent cost-of-living wage increase across the board [and] a 10 percent of salary production bonus," said the company's chief negotiator, Seb Sebetela.

Debswana did not agree to reinstate workers who had been fired for striking illegally. The number of those workers was given as 451. However, 133 of them were trainees and volunteers, who were re-employed.
