SACAA to regulate air cargo bodies
May 14, 2008

All organisations involved in the handling and transportation of air cargo would have to be approved and licensed by the SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) when new regulations come into force in January, officials said yesterday.

SACAA spokesperson Phindiwe Gwebu said the aviation authority had developed new regulations that would govern how air cargo was managed and handled. "These regulations will come into force in January 2009 and will ensure that stringent measures are applied when handling air cargo so that aviation safety and security are not compromised."

Gwebu said that once the regulations were implemented, the "weaknesses and deficiencies" in the current system would be addressed.

Colin Jordaan, the chief executive of SACAA, assured the air cargo sector that it had nothing to fear from the regulations. - Sapa
