Strike at Aflease's Bonanza South mine
September 20, 2005

By Nicky Smith

Employees at Aflease Gold and Uranium Resources' Bonanza South gold mine in Klerksdorp had gone on strike over wages, the company said yesterday.

Aflease said there was also an illegal underground sit-in. Aflease offered a three-year wage agreement with a 10 percent increase in the first year, a 7 percent increase in the second and 7.23 percent in the third. However, with the union's rejection of the offer, it had been withdrawn.

Neal Froneman, Aflease's chief executive, said the mine was not making money yet because it was still in a ramp-up phase. "It would be wrong to suggest to our workforce that we have deep pockets, and that the strike can or will result in anything other than a threat to their future employment."
