Santaco communiqué is a verbal oil slick
May 21, 2004
Yesterday's Business Watch column took the taxi industry to task for taxi drivers' lack of rights. This prompted a response from Santaco:
"The formalisation of the industry has brought with it first prize issues that have to be addressed, among which labour is one, hence the Santaco labour committee that is currently functional and is representing the industry in the labour department forum charged with the labour relations process in this sector. At this stage, the Employment Conditions Commission is overly responsible on these processes."
Taxi drivers must be sighing with relief.
A priest and a taxi driver both died and went to heaven, where the taxi driver was installed in a mansion and the priest was put in an old shack.
The priest asked Saint Peter why. "After all," he said, "I preached God's word."
"Yes you did," Saint Peter said. "But during your sermons people slept. When the taxi driver drove, everyone prayed."
